Alaskan Trip Journal

Date: Tuesday, July 1, 2003

Starting Location: Huron, SD

Destination: Ft. Pierre, SD

Trip Description: We left Huron this morning for a lunch appointment in Pierre, the state capital. We ate at Chickadily restaurant. They have a wonderful buffet of sausage, mashed potatoes, and sauerkraut. We met our cousins Dave and Jim Carslile and their families. We went from there to the South Dakota Heritage Museum. There were exhibits from prehistory to the present. There was a particularly interesting exhibit on the Wounded Knee massacre of 1890. Laura and I went to WalMart to stock up on supplies. After that, we drove across the Missouri River to Ft. Pierre. Our destination was the Carslile Ranch. The ranch is located in hilly country. My cousin Jim took me for a ride around the area. They own about 5000 acres. Ted Turner owns land to the west of their ranch. He has over 100,000 acres, where buffalo are grazing. It sure is a vast open space out here! Tomorrow, we'll sleep late, and then sightsee around Pierre.
