Alaskan Trip Journal

Date: Wednesday, July 16, 2003

Starting Location: Haines, AK

Destination: Kluane Wilderness Village, Yukon Territory

Trip Description: We slept late today. After checking our e-mail at Joanie's house, we got on the road. It took us a while to get out of Haines because we needed to make a few stops. We went to get groceries, fill up the gas tank ($1.98/gal), and dump the holding tanks. It was about 1 when we started up the Haines Highway, back into Canada. The border checkpoint is very small and guarded buy a guy who looked like he was more interested in protecting his lunch from the other customs guy rather than intercept contraband.

We really enjoyed the drive today. The scenery of Kluane National Park is amazing. The Alaska Highway follows the shorline of Kluane Lake. The mountains and glaciers are all around us. The sun is shining at 11:15. It's a different world here.

I had a request to include weather information in the log. I will add a box at the bottom of most log entries. You can check out the current weather for a particular spot we have visited. Temperatures today have been in the upper 60's, with lows around 50. It has been cloudy with some sun. The last few days in Haines have been rather cool. The temperature on Monday was probably closer to 60. It is certainly not hazy, hot, and humid up here.
