Starting Location: Ft. Pierre, SD

Destination: Rapid City, SD

Trip Description: We said our goodbyes to the Carsliles as we left Ft. Pierre. The drive south took us through a national grassland. It was scenic and deserted. We reached I-90, then headed west. Laura and I stoped in Murdo for a quick lunch at the diner. We made the obligatory stop at Wall Drug Store. Check out their link below. After going through the touristy souvenir shops, we made our way to Badlands National Park. We drove part of the Badlands loop. Our plan was to head south into the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and stop at Wounded Knee. There are more gravel roads in this area than paved ones. As we were low on gas, we stoped in the small town of Scenic, SD. The gas station was out of gas! We could take the chance that there would be gas on the Rez, or drive toward Rapid City on the paved road. We discused our choices for a minute and decided to play it safe and head for more populated areas. We stopped for some pizza in Rapid City before checking into Lake Park Campground. It was another very hot day. Tomorrow's weather looks cooler. We'll probably relax here in the campground before seeing Mt. Rushmore and other spots in the Black Hills.
