Alaskan Trip Journal

Date: Tuesday, July 15, 2003

Starting Location: Haines, AK

Destination: Haines, AK

Trip Description: Laura and I got an early start today. We went with Joanie down to the radio station to appear on her morning show. She volunteers as a DJ each Tuesday morning from 8-10 on KHNS 102. The station is a public radio station serving Haines, Skagway, and Klukwan.

We sifted through the stations CD library looking for songs to play. The station plays a large variety of music. We chose some classic rock, pop, and reggae to play. Both Laura and I got to do some short segments on the air. I did a public service announcement and the personal messages. Laura did the community callendar. This was a really cool experience. I particularly enjoyed this. Who knows, maybe this will be my next career. Don't change that dial!

After the radio show, Laura and I went geocaching in Haines. For those of you reading this that are not familiar with geocaching, the best way I can explain it is by sending you to www.geocaching.com. It is basically a hide and seek game using a computer, a GPS unit, and a hidden box of goodies. There was only one cache in Haines. It was in an area called Battery Point. The cache was located on a small hill overlooking the beach. It was a great spot to stop and look around.

We returned to the RV at about 3:30. I decided to try my hand at fishing. I bought a license and a lure. We went ot the nearby state park and atempted to catch fish. It was not a successful efort.

After a long day, Laura and I parked the RV, ate dinner, and relaxed. Today was a really fun day. Tomorrow, we plan to drive the Haines Highway back into Canada to re-join the Alaska Highway. We hope to make it to the town of Tok.
